Welcome to our September newsletter.  Spring is in the air, trees are blossoming, bulbs are flowering, and we have lots of fresh ideas to tempt you into creating quilts and projects in this new season………

:: NOTY Quilters are holding their Exhibition on 3 and 4 October 10.00am-4.00pm at Eltham Community Centre, 801 Main Road Eltham. Sewn and Quilted will be one of the shops at this exhibition, and we hope to see you there!

::  The Patchworkers and Quilters Guild of Victoria were to hold a quilt exhibition on 19 and 20 September 10.00am-5.00pm at Camberwell High School, Prospect Hill Road, Canterbury. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS QUILT SHOW HAS UNFORTUNATELY HAD TO BE CANCELLED.

Little Quilt-aholics Club

Our Little Quilt-aholics Club is up and running!  For $49.50 per month (plus $3.50 postage if applicable) receive a pattern (and sometimes a bonus pattern too!), plus the fabrics for the top and binding of a little quilt.  There will be 8 mail outs over 12 months.  Contact the shop for further details - or for further details click here.


Paper Piecing

Did you know we now carry bulk paper piecing shapes?  There are hexagons, squares, pentagons and elongated hexie shapes in a variety of sizes and In Bulk!

We also have a full supply of English Paper Piecing papers from Sue Daley both with and without the template for the shape required.

Not all of these shapes are on the website as yet, so if you’re after something in particular, please contact us at the shop.

New Products


We are now carrying the Aurifil 12 weight thread on a 325m spool.   This 100% cotton long staple thread has a beautiful sheen on it making it perfect for hand quilting and also suitable for cross stitch, embellishment, and lace making, or on the machine for applique, embroidery or quilting.  We currently have a good selection of colours in stock, or if there is a particular colour you are after, we are happy to order it in for you. 


Have you seen our funky buttons?  Yes, we have conventional ones too, but if you’re looking for something a bit different, check out the ones that are a little left of field! 


We’re very pleased to now be stocking “Quilters’ Dream” cotton wadding.  A favourite of many, this 100% pure cotton wadding has no scrim and is perfect particularly for hand quilting, but also machine quilting.  As their slogan says “Quilts Like a Dream”!


The year is running away, and with the New Year looming, we have two gorgeous calendars to choose from to help you plan your quilting events in 2016.  Perfect for presents too.



::  And still in the spirit of the end of the year, Aunties Two have a new pattern out featuring their fabulous technique in the style of a Christmas tree, or two.  Easy to make triangular trees which can be embellished with buttons, beads or even tiny fairy lights.  Large size 16” high by 7” wide, small 8½” high by 5” wide.  We also have the rainbow packs of fabrics, and pre-cut batting packs to make them.


::  Also, Sandra Boyle has listened to the pleas of her fans and released a series of patterns for several of her beautiful quilts.  We are stocking all of them and can help you choose fabrics to make your own versions of Sandra’s popular works. Click here to check them out.

PENTAGON Templates and EPP

New into the store are some PENTAGON donut templates from Di Ford-Hall with English Paper Piecing papers, from Paper Pieces, to match, perfect for many of Di’s projects and whatever else you can dream up. Contact us to purchase these.

Printable Sheets

Brand new in are printable foundation piecing sheets from EQ, the makers of the Electric Quilt computer programme, and Quilters Newsprint which is also for foundation piecing and quilting.  From your computer, print onto these sheets either the foundation piecing pattern or quilting pattern for your current project.


::  Quiltmania’s  second edition of “Simply Modern” magazine is due at the end of September, beginning of October.  We still have some copies of Issue 1.  If you would like us to keep a copy aside for you, please contact the shop with your details.

:: The 2015 Special Children’s Issue of Quilmania is currently available, full of delightful projects for the little people in your life. Priced this year at just $20!

:: Did you know we can get in any Quiltmania magazine or book that is currently in print?  If you’ve seen a book you’d like or are missing an issue of a magazine, let us know the title details and we’ll order it in especially.

New Fabrics

:: Di Ford-Hall’s first range of fabric, “Cloverdale House” is now in stock, but fast disappearing.  With a spectacular column print and a wonderful range of complementary fabrics, we can envision all kinds of quilts being made.  Please see our website for a link to Di’s range.


:: Tilda have produced another two gorgeous ranges, “Autumn Tree” and “Sweetheart”.  As always, these fabrics are available on the bolt and in starter packs.  There are fabulous spots as well as pretty florals.


:: “Sophia” from Makower is 1950’s inspired retro prints in cream, teal, pink and gold featuring birds leaves, florals and geometrics - HURRY - this is VERY POPULAR!


:: “Finch and Friends” is from watercolour artist Michelle Palmer.  A soft and sweet flannel collection, perfect for a new baby.  This collection of birds, chipmunks and rabbits is from her pen and ink illustrations, now on fabric.  A panel features four 10”square and six 5”squares of Michelle’s favourite creatures with companion prints in pink or blue with little creatures, hearts, shooting stars and messages, and include a multicolour stripe.


::  We are starting to increase our supply of stock of Bella Solids.  These plain fabrics go so well with many of the modern designers’ fabrics and are sure to enhance your next quilt project.


:: “Liberty Lolly Packs” are off-cuts of Liberty fabrics, bundled into packs with no two packs the same.  As every pack is different you might like to come into the store to select yours, or you can try for a lucky dip if you order over the phone!  These will not appear on our website as each pack is individual.

::”Sweetwater Labels”; from that talented team at Sweetwater comes a lovely range of labels, suitable for so many quilts; simple borders are the surround which just awaits the relevant information, and can then be appliqued to the back of your quilt.


::  “Simple Applique” by Kim Diehl.  A comprehensive how-to guide, in which Kim shares the secrets of her signature invisible machine-applique and wool-applique techniques, plus needle-turn and fusible techniques.


::  “Rainbow Nest” by Edyta Sitar.  We know we’ve mentioned this delightful book before, but it now comes with laser cut fusible shapes to help you make this sweet quilt.


::  Kaffe Fassett’s “Brilliant Little Patchworks” features 20 stitched and patched projects made in Kaffe’s fabrics.

::  “The Farmer’s Wife, 1930’s Sampler” by Laurie Aaron Hird.  No, your eyes are not deceiving you.  This new book commemorates the strength and hope of the farm women of the Great Depression. The 99-block queen-size sampler quilt inspired by these letters uses reproduction 1930s fabrics. For each block, instructions are provided for template piecing, and--where applicable--rotary cutting, so readers can piece the blocks based on their preferred technique.


::  “Small Treasures from Scraps” by Tara Lynn Darr.  Sweet mini quilts made with lots of scraps and left overs, with clear instructions for easy quilts, and some to get you thinking too.


::  “Modern Quilts from the Blogging Universe”.  You may recognize many of the quilters’ names in this book as bloggers whom you follow.  Featuring 19 beautifully unique quilts with a modern aesthetic, where ideas such as negative space, purposeful imperfections and improvisational piecing can be put into play.  With each quilt, the featured blogger muses on modern quilting, their personal design process and their blogs.
