Week 1: 5 days – Monday 18th to Friday 22nd January, 2016                         Cost: $365

Our focus for this group will be Foundation Piecing.

These classes are suitable for all skill levels – if you have never tackled Foundation Piecing before, or you’ve had a go but couldn’t quite ‘get it’, right through to those who are confident with the process and are ready to start a new project. Wherever you’re at with your Foundation Piecing we’d love to have you come along and join us.

The great thing about having a 5 day class or a 3 day class (or both!) is that you get dedicated sewing time to really conquer this technique or make great headway with a project. You can choose from a large selection of patterns:

-          Any of the Quiltworx®/Judy Niemeyer Patterns

-          Any of the BeColourful®/Jacqueline de Jong patterns

We have a huge range of patterns for you to choose from, and many kits in stock too. Or we would love to help you design your own colourway. Check our website for pattern suggestions.

Applique, English Paper Piecing and easy-peasy Clamshells – with Irene Blanck

3 days – Wednesday 27th to Friday 29th January, 2016     Cost: $300

Irene Blanck has been designing her own quilts and teaching her own methods of Needle Turn Applique, English Paper Piecing and Clamshells for many years. In 2015 her first book “Focus on Applique” was published, and has been a huge success. Irene has created her own very popular style with her quilts, and is a much sought after teacher. We are very lucky to have her come and join us for Summer School!

Irene has selected four of her quilts for you to choose from. These all involve needle turn applique, and some include English Paper Piecing also. Both of these techniques will be covered comprehensively using Irene’s methods on the first two days of the workshop.

Selected quilts are: Gardenhurst, Miz Kelly, Mosaics or Confetti
All of the quilts being taught are in Irene’s book (we have copies for purchase at Sewn and Quilted), or if you would prefer to purchase just the individual pattern, these can be ordered directly from Irene. Large detailed images of these quilts can be seen on Irene’s website:

On the third day, Irene has offered to teach her Clamshell technique to anyone in her class who is interested – or if you prefer you can keep stitching what you have been working on the first two days of class. In Irene’s words - “The Clamshell class is a fun technique to teach. I teach the easy-peasy way with no papers, no grid lines and (as I like to say) no BS!”

Domestic Free-Motion Machine Quilting – with Anita Ellis

3 days – Wednesday 27th to Friday 29th January, 2016     Cost: $300 (plus kit fee, approx. $50)

Would you like to learn how to machine quilt your patchwork tops with free motion flare? If so this is the course for you!  It is aimed at beginners and those quilters who have done some quilting but would really like to improve their skills.

Day one and two: You will get to know the capabilities of your sewing machine and how you can use it in ways that you didn't think possible.

Prior to the class you will need to construct a simple quilt top/s (you will need to purchase a kit/kits for this from Sewn and Quilted) that has been carefully designed to teach you many fundamental quilting techniques including:

  • Simple patchwork construction and pressing skills
  • Quilt sandwich preparation
  • Machine set up and tension issues for free motion quilting
  • Accurate stitch in the ditch
  • Stitching out many free motion quilting designs
  • Quilting design choices
  • How to keep a good balance to your quilting
  • How to adapt designs to make more designs to use on all your quilts

You will take home a gorgeous sampler quilt full of newly learned quilting techniques and designs that you can refer to and use in all your future quilts.  Comprehensive notes are supplied in case you forget anything when you get home.

You will have gained knowledge on how to quilt your patchwork tops and will be well on your way to great free motion quilting skills.  Oh, and its fun and we have lots of laughs too!

Day three: You have a choice!

Day three can be spent practicing and perfecting your free motion skills or you can choose to enhance your skills further by learning to use specially designed rulers - the Westalee® ruler foot has opened up new opportunities for domestic machine quilters. Many of those beautiful curves and designs that you see the long arm quilters do are now open to you.

If you choose the option of learning to use these rulers, the ruler foot and templates will need to be purchased, and will be available at the workshop. You will learn how to use the ruler foot and templates and be well on your way to finishing a lovely table runner with many different quilting designs.

Week 2: 3 days – Wednesday 27th to Friday 29th January, 2016                    Cost: $265

Our focus for this group will be Foundation Piecing, but we are also offering some different options for these 3 days.

You can choose from any of the quilts offered in our 5-day option or continue with a quilt you have started in the 5-day course, or this would be the perfect time to try something a bit different with Foundation Piecing:

  • What about a foundation pieced miniature quilt? Something smaller, but just as challenging!
  • We are also offering the choice of some of the Quiltsmart® patterns - the foundation piecing for these is done on interfacing which you don’t need to remove!
